Our very own rear suspension package for the VW Caddy 2K. This kit is an Intermotiv special, developed not only for getting a Caddy to sit as low as possible, but also the improve the handling while retaining a good level of comfort.
We opted for a trailing arm setup which uses high quality Polurethane bushes produced by Powerflex. This gives superior road noise isolation. We considered a 4-link setup which until now has been common on air suspension conversions, however these tend to require a lot of welding and fabrication to the chassis, and they tend to be quite noisy. Being front wheel drive, and given the suspension geometry of the Caddy, we painstakingly worked through the system in CAD before testing a number of options. We finally deduced that a trailing arm setup was the best route.
Because of the envelope of space given to the suspension on the Caddy, we needed to stick with a compact way of keeping the rear wheels in line. The standard leaf spring suspension often tends to fall short when cornering hard by pushing the rear wheels out of alignment with the front. To combat this we have developed a Watt's linkage. This linkage works similarly to a Panhard rod, however while a Panhard rod moves in an arc, the Watt's linkage retains parallelism within just a couple of millimetres throughout the suspension's travel.
We don't do things by halves, so the linkage uses race spec bearings. The linkage is fully adjustable as well, so it can be set in accordance to the desired ride height, and tightness of the bearings is adjustable. Because of the nature of the setup the central bearings require regular maintenance and lubrication.
